Hello! TransTheater is now accepting submissions.

Who can submit?

  • Anyone who identifies as transgender and/or non-binary and is involved in theater

What do you mean “involved in theater”?

  • I believe that theater should be accessible and that all kinds of theater are valuable. You do not have to be a classically trained professional actor to submit work. You can be a college theater major, or maybe you took a drama class one time in high school, or maybe you have never seen live theater but you really like watching bootlegs of musicals on youtube. If you have encountered theater in some way at some time in your life, you can submit.

What can I submit?

Original work only, please! Note: your work does not have to be from a production that has actually been performed, you can submit work that you did for practice/fun/etc.

  • production photos from a show you acted in/directed/designed
  • an audition tape
  • scripts
  • costume design sketch
  • set or lights renderings
  • makeup designs
  • chances are- if it is related to theater in any way, it’ll get posted

The

We Need Submissions from Chubby/Fat Trans People!

chubbytubbytrans:

We have had some wonderful submissions and we are looking for more from you amazing people!

You can submit HERE or tag your selfie/writing/other stuff with the tag: chubbytubbytrans.

You must identify as fat/chubby AND trans (including but not limited to agender, bigender, demigirl, demiguy, genderfluid, genderfuck, genderqueer, neutrois, non-binary, pangender, third gender, trigender, transgender, transsexual, mtf, ftm, etc.).

It is important to have a place where our chubby and fat trans (and other non-cis identified) bodies are celebrated for the beauty they hold.

((If you are not going to submit, please boost this so that other people can view this blog. It is helpful for me, it could be helpful for someone else!))

I would understand if you don’t feel qualified to answer this question, but what are your thoughts on fat animals especially pets? I’ve been seeing some “pet obesity is an epidemic” or “this fat animal is suffering” kind of posts lately. I know non-human animals and humans should be regarded differently but as a fat person I can’t help feeling put off by things like that. I would ask an animal blog but I don’t know any that aren’t definitely fat-friendly and I can’t deal with too much fatphobia.

bigfatscience:

I definitely think that humans project their fat phobia onto animals in a really gross way.

I don’t know of any science on this topic, but my experiences lead me to believe that fat phobia affects veterinary medicine in much the same way that is affects human medicine. Pet diet-culture is pretty pervasive. Non-human mammals, including pets, have gained weight in the last three decades in much the same way that humans have gained weight, and the media hand-wringing about this “pet obesity epidemic” is just as ridiculous as the media about human population-wide weight gains.

And I have heard numerous people talk about Vets “fat shaming” their pets. I once took my dog in for an acute back injury and the Vet spent the first 10 minutes lecturing me about his weight and grilling me about his diet rather than assessing his pain! Sound familiar? I asked her to provide me with some references for research showing that long-term weight loss is possible and healthy for dogs, but she just got mad. So I suspect that intentional weight loss doesn’t work for non-human animals any more than it works for humans. If anyone knows of any research on this topic, I would be interested to hear about it.

Bad Dragon Alternatives

discussing the popularity of non-BD fantasy toy companies made me think: what if people who want their weird dragon dildos don’t want to support BD, but don’t know where else to go? So! Here’s a list of non-BD fantasy toy makers that first time buyers might not have heard of:

(Note: all of these are 100% silicon and body safe afaik!)

Frisky Beast – Did you like that photoset of dinosaur’s doin it? Well, here you go. They sell fantasy dino and reptile dicks, as well as some other unique concepts. Cheaper than BD! (And no, I don’t own the centipede one. yet.)

DamnAverage – this lady makes some cool and pretty stuff at super reasonable prices! I’ve heard really good things about the Orc, so that might be one to look at if there’s one available.

Gespenst’s Fantasy Gear – like DA, this is just one guy who makes silicon dicks for fun. Some really unique styles here, like the Golem and the Octupus Buttplugs, but also some more typical shapes made in colorful body-safe silicon. Also, if you ever wanted a Darth Vader dildo, he’s got you covered. On par with Frisky Beast pricewise.

BeastLab – I’ve only heard a little about these guys, but their toys seem pretty neat, and priced between DA and Frisky Beast.

Divine Interventions – I currently can’t access the website, but these guys sell religious based sex toys. If you’ve ever wanted a Baby Jesus Buttplug, then you’ve come to the right place. I’d warn about the sheer amount of blasphemy seen here (not just Christians, there are a couple Buddhist and Hindu toys too!) but I figure if you’re looking for a dragon dildo on the ‘net you probably don’t care.

Necronomicox – More expensive than BD by a mile, but god damn, these are the most beautiful dildos I’ve ever seen. I think I’m going to shed a tear. If you love cosmic horror and old gods and tentacles you might wanna take a look.

Alien Dildos – Expensive, but god damn are they pretty! Some really neat looking shapes. Also they’re apparently big, so if that’s your cup of tea… They also sell a cock ring 😀 (Linked by madnessinthemist, thank you!)

Sidewinder – New to the scene, a German company with some neat designs, both insertables and penetrables. (Linked by killveous!)

Primal Hardwere – These guys sell cocksheathes, harnesses, an ovipositor toy (with included gelatin egg mold,) and a cactus dildo. If you’re looking for an alternative to BD’s cocksheathes they’re a safe bet! (Linked by killveous!)

EDIT:

If you don’t want to support Bad-Dragon directly but would love one of their designs, you could look for it on the BD Secondhand Forum. Silicon toys can be disinfected and boiled so they’re totally safe to trade or sell. Many people on these forums sell toys from these other sites too!

The following was added by Vehki as a reblog and has been c+p’d here:

The Fleshlight Freaks line has some toys that are of the fantasy variety, both penetrables and insertables. They have zombie/cyborg/alien/vampire and a couple of others in similar themes

Whipspider Rubberworks seem to have gone extinct, but a few of their products are still available at SheVibe. (ONLY the explorer, screw and wave, which is a bit sad, I wish the tentacles were still around)

Speaking of SheVibe, their ‘fantasy’ section of toys may have things that appeal. Things like the Funfactory TigerTantus Splash, or BS is nice toys might appeal to the fantasy lovers.

The person running Damn Average is cultivating a nice collection of other cool toys available on etsy in her likes, which are worth a look at. Stone, glass, silicone and wood are all in there.

Fucking Sculptures make really damn pretty toys in a few abstract shapes

Average on Furaffinity (You’ll need to sign in/register to see his stuff) has a few things up and running, though I’m not sure how ordering works on furaffinity. This is a list of his available models.

If there’s anyone i forgot, or if I got any information wrong, lemme know! I’m a bit of a newb to the fantasy toy scene but I’d love to help people know their options!

(Extra addendum to clear things up: I will still be purchasing from BD as I like many of their designs. However, I will also be sure to patronize these other companies in the future. First thing’s first… a Euphoberia, a Garchomp, and a Golem…)

Because Bad Dragons problems were pointed out to me yesterday, so here are potential some alternatives!

@klassicalkelt

WAIT what’s wrong with BD? Serious inquiry.

For some reason, it never occurred to me that Project Gutenberg would have public domain old cookbooks. This is BRILLIANT. There’s a 1953 cranberry recipe pamphlet and a suffrage cookbook from 1915 and a translation of Apicus’s guide to food in Imperial Rome and a whole bunch of other fascinating old cookbooks, many pre-1800. Treasure trove!

I love you for sharing this!!!

For more old cookbooks, Michigan State University has 76 of their historical cookbooks scanned and searchable at Feeding America: The Historic American Cookbook Project.

For even older recipes, check out Gode Cookery.  They list medieval and Renaissance cooking instructions and translate the recipes for you into measurable amounts and all.

I have have have to mention Miss Leslie. I learned so much about cooking from that book, even if a lot of it is outdated.

Also, Forme of Cury is great fun, if you can muddle through the Middle English (Gode Cookery has translations and adaptions of some of the recipes from this).

@soyeahso I know you’re looking into pre-internet recipes

How I Learn Languages

july-19th-club:

mickybyrd:

As an aspiring polyglot, it’s important that I have a bunch of resources at my disposal for language learning. I use a variety of resources for my learning, such as books, websites, apps, T.V. shows, movies, etc. These are some of my resources!

-Websites-

1. Omniglot

This website is more for finding information about languages and finding languages to learn. It has a very comprehensive list of languages and you can find plenty of secondary resources for learning the language. You can find tutors for that language, and even songs in your target language. I can just about guarantee you that no matter what language you’re looking for, it will be documented here. It is absolutely amazing, and it is a FANTASTIC resource for the dedicated linguist.

http://www.omniglot.com/

2. Duolingo

This is both a website AND an app, however, I tend to use the website more frequently, mainly because I’m always on my laptop anyway. The learning system that this website uses makes out very easy to stay motivated, and the lessons are organized amazingly. Currently, the website offers about 27 different language courses for English speakers, and various language courses for speakers of languages other than English. You can set goals for yourself, take multiple courses, be involved in discussions, and even do translating activities. Beware though, it gets VERY addicting.

https://www.duolingo.com

3. Memrise

Also a website AND an app, this is my all time favorite resource for learning languages. It has SO many languages to choose from, and it even offers subjects other than languages, although foreign language learning is its primary appeal factor.

http://www.memrise.com/home/

4. BBC Languages

Although this sector of BBC has been archived and is no longer updated, it still contains some valuable information. It includes some useful phrases, alphabet guides, and jokes in many languages. You’re bound to learn something new there, so check it out!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/

5. Foreign Service Institute (FSI)

This website offers language courses constructed by the U.S. government, and relies heavily on audio-based learning. However, many of the language courses include lessons in the form of pdf. There is a very large selection of languages to choose from, so this resource is very good for getting an excellent introduction to your target language.

https://fsi-languages.yojik.eu/

6. Live Lingua Project

Claiming to be the internet’s largest collection of free public domain language learning materials, this website is a MUST for language learners. It contains the FSI courses, Peace Corps language learning materials, and the DLI (military) language courses. It also offers Skype sessions for language learners in several different languages! The main appeal of this website, however, is the Peace Corps language material archive. There are SO many different languages to choose from, and there are many ebooks and audio files to take advantage of here.

https://www.livelingua.com/#project

7. Languages On the Web

This website offers texts that translate English texts into 55 other languages. It is not a translator, it merely provides reading material in foreign languages to learners. It is a very useful website, especially for analyzing how sentences are formed in other languages.

http://www.lonweb.org/

8. Learn 101

This website is really helpful for explaining grammatical concepts and for learning general stuff about languages, such as verbs, vocabulary, nouns, adjectives, basic phrases, foods, etc. There are quite alot of languages offered on this website, so it’s a great resource!

http://learn101.org/

9. Clozemaster

This website is great for learning languages through a sentence based, contextual experience. It’s a bit like Duolingo in that sense, and it requires you to fill in missing words from sentences. In my opinion, it’s better for people with a background in their target language, and they offer many different options for languages. It’s also good for speakers of a native language other than English!

https://www.clozemaster.com/

10. Lexicity

This is a great website for ancient language learners, and it provides resources for Egyptian, Mayan, Hittite, Latin, Old English, Etruscan, Gaulish, and several others. I have found the majority of resources that I have looked through helpful to my learning efforts. They have dictionaries, grammars, charts, and texts, and it is a very comprehensive resource.

http://lexicity.com/

11. Book2

This is a good resource for learners looking for audio files to help them practice their listening. I haven’t used it all too much, but there are many language options, so you’re bound to find a language that you find interesting on here.

http://www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/

12. Lang-8

This is a great resource for getting feedback on your writing in your target language. You can post things in your target language, and native speakers of that language will correct it, and you can do the same for other people! It’s very helpful, and is a great resource if you have to write in your target language often.

http://lang-8.com/

13. Bilinguis

This website offers a few books to read in different languages and is good for comparing different languages of the same book. This makes for good practice for reading in your target language.

http://bilinguis.com/

14. Udemy

There are quite a few languages courses on this website, although several of them cost money. However, there are quite a few courses that are free, and are good for introducing you to your language of choice.

https://www.udemy.com/courses/

-Apps-

1. Memrise

As mentioned above in the websites section, this app is so amazing for on-the-go language learning, as well as for subjects other than languages! It helps users memorize concepts with “meme” which are pictures that will remind you of what the word or concept means, and it’s such a unique and fun learning experience! It has the feel of using flashcards, but I just love using this app so much.

2. Duolingo

Also mentioned in the websites section, this app is great for both learning new words and reviewing words that you have either memorized or have just been exposed to. There are grammar lessons available, translation activities, groups that you can join, and Duolingo makes it fun to learn a language with it’s reward system.

3. HelloTalk

This is my absolute FAVORITE app to talk to native speakers of my target language(s). You can become language partners with people, help others with translations, video/voice call, send voice messages, and have as many partners as you want! It’s an absolutely amazing app, and I highly recommend it to everyone! Warning- If you’re a native English speaker looking for a native Chinese speaker, you will get HUNDREDS of requests. It might overwhelm you for a second.

4. TuneIn Radio

This is really great for finding stations in your target language, and it helps with practicing both comprehension of spoken language as well as introduces you to awesome music in your target language!

5. Tigercards

This app presents words in the form of lists, and gives you vocab so that you can review it. Not the best presentation of words and it doesn’t really offer a memorization technique like Memrise, but it’s still helpful!

6. Busuu

This app is a bit like Duolingo, and it offers German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, English, Italian, Russian, Polish, Turkish, Japanese, and Chinese!

7. uTalk

This app offers so many different languages, it’s pretty incredible. There are games that you can play, phrasebooks, and several other features. The interface is also really awesome and simple, so it makes learning easier than usual. Definitely a must have.

8. Innovative Language

I haven’t used this app much, but I have heard that the lessons on this app are very good, and you can download the lessons so that you can view them offline.

9. FlashSticks

This has been super helpful to me, in addition to the games and flashcards that it offers, it also provides an object scanner, which uses your camera to scan objects and then tells you what it’s called in your target language!

10. Mondly

This has been an awesome resource for me since it’s a bit like Duolingo, only with more unique language options. I’m currently using it to learn Hindi, however, there are tons of other language options. The interface is awesome, and I love using it.

11. MindSnacks

This company makes several different language apps, and currently I’m using the Mandarin, Japanese, and French ones. So far, I’ve really enjoyed these apps!

12. Spotify

Through Spotify’s “Word” category, there are many different playlists dedicated to language learning, such as for Arabic, Mandarin, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, and Swedish!

13. Quizlet

This is more of a diy language learning resource. It is not an inherent language learning resource, however, if you learn best through lists and/or flashcards, then this app allows you to make cards and review vocab that way! I use it all the time for exams!

14. FluentU

This is an awesome app for watching videos in your target language, and is really good for learning new words.

-Books-

1. Teach Yourself

This series offers an astounding number of languages, and I have found them to be pretty effective in helping me learn languages. I have used the Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, and Irish ones.

2. Barron’s Grammar and Verb books

I really like the way Barron’s does language books, so far I have used their Japanese grammar book and their Russian verbs book, and I really like the layout of them, especially the grammar book!

3. Dk Visual Bilingual Dictionaries

These are so helpful for me, I’ve been using the Mandarin and Japanese dictionaries for a long time, and they are so comprehensive and awesome!

4. Ethnologue

These aren’t language “learning” materials, but rather they help me find new languages to learn. These are more for the linguistic lovers, since they catalog almost every living language in the world in every country, and provide language maps and statistics. There’s really fascinating stuff in those books, so I highly recommend purchasing them.

5. The “Dirty” books

So far, I have only used the Japanese version, however, I really like what the book includes, and it’s great for learning slang in your target language, and things that traditional textbooks wouldn’t teach you.

6. Living Language

I LOVE these books so much, I’ve used the Russian, Mandarin, and French ones and I’ve found them very helpful! The layout of these are very nice, and they’re pretty comprehensive.

7. Tuttle books

Tuttle offers several different language books, and they all are very good in my opinion. I have used their books for Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, and Hindi.

That’s all that I have right now, but if you all would like more resources than I will definitely make a second one!

So, your queer history lesson for the day:

Everyone’s heard that pirate’s call each other “matey”. What you probably haven’t heard is that the word matey comes from “matelote”.

In the Caribbean this word was used between buccaneers to signify a life partner. Matelotes could inherit from each other, shared space, fought together, could speak for each other when one was incapacitated or absent, and more often than not the relationship was romantic and sexual.

That’s right folks. Pirates had a term for their gay life partners.

In light of this, I present to you a new alternative for significant other and partner. Bring back matelote.

(You can learn more about the practice of matelotage in: The Origins and Role of Same-Sex Relations in Human Societies by James Niell)

Arrr! Matelotage was such a great idea!

In an age when the English Navy ran on “rum, sodomy and the lash,” (as noted in many writings of the time), homosexual relationships were punishable by death.

The result here was that in the English Navy, relationships went underground. Very often, they became forced, often between a superior and a subordinate. When English crews went on the account, becoming pirates, they looked for a way to legitimize relationships of honest affection.
Matelotage [French; meaning ‘seamanship’] , now used as an English word, became a term for a legal marriage between two men.

[…]

In pirate society (and only pirate society) two men could “marry.” They would exchange gold rings, and pledge eternal union. After this, they were expected to share everything.  Plunder and living spaces were obvious, but couples in matelotage were also known to share other property, and even women. If one of the partners was killed in action, pirate captains were careful to make sure that the surviving member received both shares of plunder, as well as any appropriate death benefits.

Simply put, homosexual relationships had been kept under wraps by people in fear for their lives because of draconian laws. Among sailors who had practiced this form of release themselves, it lost its sense of being alien, and so became accepted and legitimized as soon as they (by turning pirate) gained the right to make their own laws. {X}

Another excellent addition!

What if we learned all these things growing up? What if experts on different aspects of history wrote a history book together. What if the editor ensured that POC, women LGBTQA and other minorities’ histories weren’t erased.

I am all for specialization. I follow blogs that show me history and the modern world from different perspectives.

Because my sixteen years of education are incomplete. Woefully incomplete.

I’m so glad

Hidden Platform Shoe Tutorial for Invisibly Increasing Height

View full size tutorial on DeviantArt here: http://rinkujutsu.deviantart.com/art/Hidden-Heeled-Platform-Shoe-Tutorial-Genos-OPM-614226288

Here is a tutorial for adding hidden heels/platforms to regular shoes or boots.  I usually don’t care to boost my height or lengthen my legs for a costume, but I need to be taller than my brother who will be wearing Saitama to go with my Genos from One-Punch Man costume.  As you can gather, hidden heels are handy for making heights in cosplay groups accurate 😛 .  Most other times, I don’t think it is worth sacrificing comfortable shoes to be taller.

If there is anything that is confusing or needs to be clarified in this tutorial, let me know so I can make it better!

I would love to see anything made with this tutorial!  Send me the link
to finished projects so that I can add it to the DeviantArt
description.

Okay here me out.

A young adult novel written by a disabled author.

Where the main character gets into an accident and must use a wheelchair.

(And is written fairly accurately as the author is also in a wheelchair.)

There are more disabled characters than you can count.

The ones who aren’t disabled are the enemies.

It takes place in an alternate version of the 1950s, at an institution for people with disabilities and superabilities.

You see how the disabilities relate to the superabilities (superpowers).

The main character goes through the stages of grief after she realizes that she won’t be able to walk again but she is able to come out of it, not because of a love interest, but because she’s able to find her own strength. (And hit her mentor in the face with a weight.)

In fact, the main character doesn’t have any love interest at all.

None.

You could make the argument that she’s aromantic/asexual.

And the author would totally support that argument.

But despite not having a love interest, the main character is truly cared for, especially by her gruff mentor with a heart of gold.

Did somebody say found families and father-figure-daughter-figure relationships?

Also there’s an interracial couple thirty years in the making.

And an underground resistance of students with disabilities trying to prove that they’re stronger than people think.

And in the end, they’re able to save the day.

And there are a lot of hugs.

And a lot of chocolate milk.

And the main character comes to terms with the fact that her biological family is horrible but she’s fine with that because she’s got the gruff mentor with a heart of gold who may or may not be in the CIA and also knew Al Capone.

And nobody dies.

And nobody dies.

And nobody kills themselves because they think that their lives are over now that they are in fact disabled.

Unlike some other books!

Oh and there’s a pig in a wheelchair.

And it’s all written by a disabled college student who really really needs the money for college and her apartment because apparently life is expensive (who knew?)

And it’s not the best written and it’s not error free but it was written with a lot of heart and a lot of passion in the early hours of the morning because that’s when the author had free time. But if nothing else, it has amazing disability representation. And a pig in a wheelchair.

Interested?

Well, guess what?

That author is me, that book is mine, that book is published, that book is available for you to buy, that book even comes in a paperback version so that you can hold in your hands a story with disability representation in which none of the characters die or talk about how they’re a burden and how they’re lives are over (well, Juniper does once but Ryder knocks some sense into her.)

It’s called The Defectives and you can buy it here:

https://www.amazon.com/Defectives-Burgandi-Rakoska-ebook/dp/B01G7TTLXE?ie=UTF8&qid=1464304077&ref_=sr_1_1&s=digital-text&sr=1-1

So if you’re looking for disability representation that doesn’t end with death and you want to help out a novice disabled author who really needs the money, please consider buying this book.

If nothing else, please signal boost!

Great googly moogly!

Well something most have resonated with a bunch of you because my sales just skyrocketed. Thank you all so much!
